where language fails us.

our grammar is something else and a sermon.

november 2021 • with sarah bitamazire

what time does evening begin?

and for that matter when is morning? why is afternoon the only time that makes sense? unless we question the validity of noon? and by extension what is afterwards anyway?

•

semantics, etymologies, and definitions as explanations for public discourse and yet we are constantly in argument over what we mean to say. our conversations are slippery forms of communication who gain traction, lack clarity, and at the moment of action are proven to be a misunderstanding of terms, instructions, and emotions. we want to leave, to move away from those folks who do not understand us, get us, and accept that we are right. validation and affirmation are demands who gain a similar traction and still lack clarity and still result in misunderstood action. so, what are we to do?

•

i do not have that answer, because i do not know if there is a solution for what determines who is worth it. i do know what rules i had, i had to loosen. i do know what boundaries i did not acknowledge, i had to announce and embrace. i do know my nonchalant posture of ambivalence is only as necessary as i allow it, and it is always a good time to do something different.

•

the only people who want things to be the same are conservative, and i am not those people. no shade… well, maybe an eclipse.

•

what have you learned that is not masquerading as universal answers or solutions?

what have you learned that is not self-help, personal development, and/or thriving?

what do you know now that is not for sale?

•

there is something in the nothing.

a sermon.

General idea.

Questions heavily drenched in religious trauma. Responses in poetry and blasphemous nuance.

statement.

5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free. 9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. ephesians 6:5-9

a response.

disobedience on display

betrayal of lines as incisions

bleeding colors over skin no longer

blue notes breathing together inhalations

in repetition demanding audible exhalations

as exaltations a favor for a favor an endorsement

of people in pursuit of mastery a dutiful occupation

charmed my overtures with an aesthetic of respect

lacking its depth or desire or basis in reality mastery

as occupation is mislabeled privilege sunken into our means of nourishment imbibed as complete a detail critiqued to no avail left destitute with only favoritism as hope stolen by sunday service messages on freedom as obedience
[a cell unsaturated by respiration floats inert as waste]

until it is expelled in ritual a moving meditation in

heat scores our body in memory’s

sonata a melody trapped by

extinct languages whose

words are present whose

definitions are explanations of a lifetime decimated by decay a blight of the industrial revolution’s religion of praxis a practical lucidity for lives lived in a tradition of more fucking repetitions in fields of apparel and filling and thread and textile and sweet and rum and blood and sweat and leather piercing desperation for a heaven undeliverable to the living and yet still

through our labor we beg for death

lies lived as truth were suffocated

promises drained the bywater

is anything left

to be free with

to enjoy

to love

freedom stole my heart

said they’d give it back for my soul

told me live my life on the lam untouchable

always a place to go never a place to stay to belong

where my hugs are received and

i am air

i am water

i am earthen

i am cosmic dust

i am a physics of desire

i am a poiesis of a poetic

of a life that cannot be stolen

i am you one part of we that is us

and ours is an unplanned obsolescence.
